The Biggest Purse

I should be updating family far and wide with Christmas pictures. But I am notorious for being late with that so bear with me as I get this observation out of my head.

I love purses.  I used to love to peruse the end of season sales at Dillards for steals on handbags by the likes of Antonio Melani, and Fossil. In the past year I have purchased two by Ellington and they are fast becoming my favorites. One is actually named the Nicole Hobo, but I didn't know it until I looked it up online after coveting my friend's for weeks.

Anyway, a purse is a grand thing. It holds extra lipstick, tissues, sunglasses, gloves, chap stick, hand lotion.. you get the idea. It's like a first aid kit really.  A Boy Scout's dream if you think about it. For no matter what I am always prepared.

Except for pens. I never seem to have a pen.

But, as I got out of my car tonight and dropped my keys in the cup holder of my van, I realized I have the biggest purse of all.  My car.

Let me tell you I have even more things to be prepared for in my trusty van.  In the console between the two front seats are a water bottle, a cup of applesauce, a some change, earphones, 3 CDs, Olivia's toy fairy, and of course pens. There is usually an old Diet Pepsi cup waiting to either be thrown out or refilled too.

But go beyond that and there are extra hand warmers in the glove box, Motrin and heartburn medicine, disposable cups in the back, an actual first aid kit (two if you really want to know), and of course a whole box of tampons. Not to mention my skis that live in the back from now until April 1 along with the boots, and gloves that go with it.

I am glade that my van is a lovely neutral shade that matches anything. And also like a purse it is full of trash in the bottom. Empty gum wrappers, old hand warmers, the kids snacks from the gas station, old French fries and McDonald's toys.  I clean it out every so often when I am waiting in line at the school to pick up the kids. But not as often as I should.

I listen to my music in the van. I knit, read books, shuttle kids, and this year all the Christmas presents sat in the trunk under a sled and my skis.  It is very versatile! I hate it when we go places in JaDee's truck because inevitably I need something that I know right where it is in my van, but is not to be found in the pick up... Sorry, no tampons under those seats I am afraid.

So yeah, my van is like a giant purse on wheels.

And it always has a pen.

Brilliant! Car as purse! I travel/work out of my car quite a bit and always considered it somewhat of a suitcase because I also carry extra shoes and clothing, oh and now an extra pair of ice cleats. That's just me, though. I like the idea that we as women have in common that our cars are just big purses that we can travel in. We are very clever.

That is why Mitch said his older siblings' cars always smelled like "kids"-- and he didn't mean it nicely. But now guess what? Our car smells just like "kids" and I don't think he's even noticed!

You write so well Nicole!! This blog subject is DEAD ON!! Although I don't like big purses I do feel the same way about the things in my truck. Happy New Year to you and your family!

Ha! Excellent observation. I've felt discombobulated since our van died a couple of months ago. Now I know why - I lost my purse!

A little quote or two...

“There is in every true woman's heart, a spark of heavenly fire, which lies dormant in the broad daylight of prosperity, but which kindles up and beams and blazes in the dark hour of adversity.” -Washington Irving

BOOK HOUSE from the paper of my Grandfather Sidney W. Campbell

I always think the cover of a book is like a door Which opens into someone's house where I've not been
before. A pirate or a fairy queen may lift the latch for me. I always wonder when I knock, what welcome there will be. And when I find a house that's dull, I do not often stay But when I find one full of friends, I'm apt to spend the day. I never know what sort of folks will be within you see. And that's why reading always is so interesting to me. ~~Annie Fellows Johnston
