You want to talk about what?

It was that time of year again. You know ladies the yearly exam. I went to a women's center that does everything but deliver babies, and because I am out of that mode I like that they are not so focused on the cash crop of pregnancy that us non-preggo people get looked over. In fact my Dr. talked to me for over an hour about some of my on-going concerns and medical history before inviting me to the exam table.

In which the subject turned to the most unlikely of all topics.

Hitler and Nazi Germany.

Bet you never got that one with a side of speculum before.

It came about when during that ackward attempt to make small talk to distract the patient, she asked me if I had plans after my kids were all in school in 2 years. I told her I was a high school history teacher and hoped to maybe teach. Which then lead to how her husband likes to watch all those military documentaries about WWII on the History Channel which of course lead to an analysis on Hitler and his rise to power while examining my ovaries.

Of course it did.

Hm. I think I would have preferred the collapse of the Soviet Union myself (yes I was history minor with a teaching certificate, once.)

The question is, was the speculum invented by a Nazi era doctor?

That is awesome you guys talked about that! At least she tried to talk about something. I've had one done once where we didn't talk at all... it was super awkward.

One time I was getting a ladies exam and we started talking about classic cars (no, I know NOTHING about them) and my doctor got telling a story about when he was in high school and his car and yada yada yada and he was done with the exam but I didn't know it... so he and the nurse sitting in there were discussing it while I was wide open to the world wondering if I was done and FINALLY he says I can sit up. So I laid there for an extra couple of minutes since the conversation topic was SO engrossing that they couldn't mention to me that my exam was over! At least we weren't talking about Hitler though :)

This post cracked me up! One time at one of my visits, my midwife got up and actually leaned on my leg with her elbow and just kept the conversation going...it was VERY weird. Like almost too casual, like some Barry White music should have busted out and a disco ball turn on. Can you say AWKWARD!!!

You are histerical and should write some funny book on the day to day drama of motherhood. The new Erma Bombeck or something. Really, think about it. I've told Barry what a good writer you are....

A little quote or two...

“There is in every true woman's heart, a spark of heavenly fire, which lies dormant in the broad daylight of prosperity, but which kindles up and beams and blazes in the dark hour of adversity.” -Washington Irving

BOOK HOUSE from the paper of my Grandfather Sidney W. Campbell

I always think the cover of a book is like a door Which opens into someone's house where I've not been
before. A pirate or a fairy queen may lift the latch for me. I always wonder when I knock, what welcome there will be. And when I find a house that's dull, I do not often stay But when I find one full of friends, I'm apt to spend the day. I never know what sort of folks will be within you see. And that's why reading always is so interesting to me. ~~Annie Fellows Johnston
